Starting Our Off-Grid Homestead: Turning Raw Land Into a Dream
The Beginning of a Dream: Our Journey Toward an Off-Grid Homestead
There is something about the quiet of the woods that makes a person pause and imagine a different kind of life.
A slower life.
A simpler life.
A life built with your own hands.
For us, that dream began with a piece of land in the woods of New Brunswick.
Six and a half acres of forest on a quiet country dirt road. No houses nearby, no traffic noise, just trees stretching in every direction and the kind of silence you only find far from the city.

Along the back of the property, a beautiful brook winds through the woods, its gentle flow adding a peaceful soundtrack to the forest. Standing beside it, it is easy to imagine the quiet life we hope to build there.
It is still raw land. Untouched in many ways. But to us, it already feels like the beginning of a future homestead.
The First Steps on Our Land
This year we officially took the first steps toward that dream, and we're so excited!
Jason brought his new chainsaw, and I came armed with my branch cutters. Together we started clearing the property, one tree and one branch at a time.

For us, those first days on the land were incredibly exciting. It was hard work and required plenty of sweat equity, but it was deeply rewarding.
With each tree we cut down, we slowly began shaping the land into the vision we had for our future homestead.
Every branch cut and every tree stacked felt like progress. By the end of the day we were covered in pine needles, with sap clinging stubbornly to our clothes.
Exhausted but fulfilled. Working side by side.
We both felt incredibly happy.

We’ve been carefully piling the wood between the trees across the property, creating neat stacks that will one day become firewood.
One of the most exciting days was when we had an excavator come in to help with the bigger work. Brush piles were removed, stumps uprooted, the ground was levelled, and crushed stone was laid down to form the start of our driveway.

The power of heavy machinery!
Seeing that driveway appear for the first time felt like watching the land begin to transform.
Right now, there is just a small opening. On our next few trips to the property, we’ll continue clearing until the space is large enough for the future cabin we hope to build.

The Cabin That Will Start It All
Our plan is to build a small off-grid cabin of about 625 square feet.
Cute & Cozy. That’s part of the beauty of it.
A small cabin forces you to focus on what truly matters.
A warm wood stove in the winter.
A place to cook good food.
Windows looking out onto our forest oasis.
From that small cabin, we hope to slowly build the rest of our homestead.
A woodshed to store firewood.
A workshop for projects and repairs (Jason's man cave!)
Garden beds filled with vegetables we've grown ourselves.
Flower gardens bursting with colour in the summer.
Perhaps even a She-Shed for me, for my creative hobbies.
And eventually, animals. Starting with a new puppy!
It's so nice to dream
The Homestead We Imagine
Like many people who dream of homesteading, we imagine a life that includes animals and a deep connection to the land.
Chickens scratching in the yard.
Goats wandering the pasture.
Ducks near a small pond.
Rabbits raised with care.
It’s a vision of self-sufficiency and simple living that feels both old-fashioned and incredibly meaningful in today’s world.
We know it won’t happen overnight. Homesteads are built step by step, season by season.
But every cleared tree, every pile of wood, and every trip to the land brings that dream a little closer.

Where Forest Land Designs Comes From
Our love for homesteading, nature, and simple living is what inspired me to start Forest Land Designs.
Even though we’re still in the early stages of building our own homestead, we already feel connected to the lifestyle and the people who live it every day.
That’s why I create personalized metal signs inspired by homesteading, gardening, and off-grid life.

Signs for homestead entrances.
Signs for chicken coops and barns.
Signs that celebrate family farms and country living.
Every homestead has a story, and we love creating pieces that help tell those stories.
The Journey Is Just Beginning
Right now, our homestead is still a patch of forest, a gravel driveway, and a growing clearing among the trees.
But to us, it already feels like the start of something truly special.
Over time, we hope to share more of this journey here on the blog, from clearing land and building our cabin to eventually raising animals and living more self-sufficiently.
If you share the same dream of homesteading, gardening, or living closer to nature, we’re glad you’re here. Feel free to reach out!
This is just the beginning.

From our little forest oasis,
tired, happy, and covered in pine needles,
Natalie
